Two-Way Spanish Immersion (TWI) Program

What Is TWI or Dual Language?

TWI is a program where beginning in kindergarten, instruction is provided in Spanish and English. In CPSD6, we offer our Two-Way Spanish Immersion Program starting in kindergarten, and continuing through high school.

Dual Language has three core goals for each and every student:

  1. Bilingualism and biliteracy
  2. High levels of academic achievement
  3. Socio-cultural competence

How Does it Work?

Students in TWI spend part of their day learning in Spanish and the other part of the day learning in English. We use a 90/10 model for dual language; please see the Elementary K-5 link above for more details regarding what this means.

6 Stages of New Language Acquisition

It typically takes 7-10 years to become proficient in a new language. The following stages may help you understand the progression your child is undergoing while learning a new language.

  1. Pre-production – “silent period”
  2. Early Production - Short words and sentences
  3. Speech Emergent - Longer words and sentences familiar topics
  4. Beginning Fluency - Fairly fluent, minimal errors, gaps in vocabulary
  5. Intermediate Fluency Fluent, few errors, some gaps in vocabulary
  6. Fluent in All Contexts - May still have accent, comfortable expressing self

Each child develops uniquely at their own rate. Please refer to the stages of language acquisition as a guide.
