Student Technology Use Guidelines

CPSD6 Digital Device and Technology Use Agreement

This agreement outlines expectations for the safe, respectful, and responsible use of school computers, devices (e.g., Chromebooks), school internet (including Wi-Fi), and personal devices used at school. It applies to all students and their sponsoring parents/guardians. Devices are provided as learning tools for schoolwork only, and usage must comply with District 6 policies, the Student Code of Conduct, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws.

Student Responsibilities

When using school technology or personal devices at school or home, I agree to be a good digital citizen by being SAFE, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE, as outlined below:

  • Appropriate Use: I will use devices and the internet for school-appropriate content and learning activities only, avoiding commercial purposes or wasting limited resources.
  • Respectful Behavior: I will use good manners and appropriate language, avoiding negative interactions online or in person. I will not engage in or record situations that violate school rules (e.g., harassment, fighting, or misconduct), either inside or outside of school, that could make anyone feel unsafe or undermine school safety and order.
  • Privacy and Security: I will not share personal information (e.g., name, address, phone number) about myself or others online, nor will I share my passwords or login details with anyone, even friends. I will not take or share photos, videos, or audio of anyone without their permission.
  • Care of Devices: I will handle devices carefully, protecting them from drops, water, food, or outdoor exposure. I will not mark, draw, or damage them intentionally (e.g., popping off keys). I will keep the device with me or in my classroom and report any damage or issues to my teacher immediately.
  • Academic Integrity: I will not look at or use anyone else’s work without permission, send others’ content without consent, or violate copyright laws.
  • Device Management: I will charge my device at home and bring it to school ready for use. I will not change settings without permission, use devices in restrooms or locker rooms, or use Wi-Fi on personal devices outside of acceptable times. If I don’t know how to use something, I’ll ask for help.
  • Monitoring Awareness: I understand that my use of the school’s network is monitored and filtered, though the district cannot guarantee all inappropriate content will be blocked.

I understand that violating these rules may result in discipline, including expulsion, loss of device privileges, or referral to law enforcement if appropriate. I promise to follow these guidelines.

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

As the sponsoring parent/guardian, I agree to support my student’s responsible use of school-issued devices and technology:

  • Supervision: I will oversee my student’s device use at home and ensure it is used for schoolwork only when off campus.
  • Care and Reporting: I will not attempt to repair the device myself and will report any issues to the school. I will ensure the device is charged at home and ready for school use.
  • Financial Responsibility: I will cover repair or replacement costs (up to $200) if the device is damaged or lost due to neglect or carelessness, with payment directed to my student’s school. Normal wear and tear is excluded.
  • Device Return: I will return the device to the school if requested or if my student leaves District 6.
  • Safety and Accountability: I understand my student could be held accountable for actions inside or outside of school that threaten the safety of District 6 students or staff or undermine the district’s authority to maintain safety and order.

I have reviewed these guidelines with my student, and we both understand and agree to follow them. I acknowledge that violations may lead to discipline, including expulsion, suspension of device access, or legal action if warranted.

General Provisions

  • Supervised Use: On campus, devices will be used under District 6 staff supervision. If a device is sent home for instruction, parents/guardians are responsible for its use, safety, and care.
  • Educational Purpose: Devices enhance and tailor education but are not foolproof against inappropriate content. The district strives to filter internet access but cannot guarantee complete protection.
