Dear D6 Families, Staff & Community,
As you may have heard, today Governor Kate Brown announced that she is directing the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority to develop rules aligning to CDC recommendations and requiring masks indoors for K-12 schools (including vaccinated staff and students) for the start of the 2021-22 school year. The Governor’s statement can be found here and some initial information from ODE may be found here.

We recognize that this decision is not aligned to our recent D6 policy allowing for “choice” and will be met with a variety of views and opinions from our community. Since implementation of this policy, we have been monitoring the data closely and we recognized the potential for reinstatement of restrictions and precautionary measures based on the case data/trends. For staff & families participating in our summer school programs, we will continue with the “choice” policy until the rule is formally adopted by ODE. A date for adoption has not been determined, but is expected to take place very soon.

Over the next few days, we will be working to address the implications of this mandate on our summer school program as well as our plans for the opening of schools in the fall. We believe it is important for everyone to recognize the significance of getting our students back into our school full time. Having consistent, full school days is paramount in making a recovery from the impact of this pandemic. In spite of the recent announcement, we continue to be optimistic about a return to in-person instruction. We hope to provide additional information to families next week as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools. We will persevere through this challenging time with grit and determination to maximize all opportunities for our students.

Sincerely,
Walt Davenport
Superintendent
