NAEP Assessment for 4th Graders

January 10th, 2017 by christine.beck@district6.org

Sam’s Valley Elementary has been selected to participate in the NAEP assessments this school year.  On March 3, 2017, all of our 4th graders will be completing either a math or reading assessment. More information about the NAEP assessment is being sent home with 4th grade students on Thursday, January 12, 2017. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our school at 541-494-6870.

What is NAEP? Why is it important to take it?

NAEP produces the Nation’s Report Card and is considered the gold standard for large-scale assessment. It is the largest nationally representative assessment of what American students know and can do in key subjects, which allows for Oregonians to see how our students are performing compared to their peers in other states. NAEP assessments began in 1969 and are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. They are conducted periodically in reading, math, science, writing, U.S. history, civics, geography, and other subjects. The results, especially on the math and reading assessments that are given every two years, are widely reported, and they are an integral part of our nation’s evaluation of the condition and progress of education. NAEP is a big picture test. It gives us a good sense of the direction the nation is moving and provides critical long-term trending data.

Cougar near Campus

September 28th, 2016 by christine.beck@district6.org

September 28, 2016

Dear Parent and Guardians,

Today at Sam’s Valley Elementary, we took precautionary measures to ensure the safety of your student(s).  Late afternoon on Tuesday, September 27, a watchful neighbor reported seeing three cougars near school on private property.  At least one of the animals was reported to have killed livestock.  Authorities were notified and we worked closely with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Upon hearing of the potential threat, we made the decision to limit recess to only indoor locations and our covered play area this morning until further notice from authorities.  As of 9:00am this morning, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that all three cougars have been trapped.  They reminded us as well that cougars are common in our rural areas and offered the attached brochure.

I would like to commend our staff, students, concerned community members and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.  I do not feel that our students were ever in danger today, but all parties involved responded quickly and made sure every child was safe.  These procedures are part of a district-wide and state crisis readiness plan.  Students were not informed of a cougar sighting nor did they witness one.

Please talk to your students about the importance of following directions from adults during all emergency procedures and feel free to call me if you have any questions.
