~Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS)~
4/5/12
Dear Parents,
We will be starting the third round of the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills
(OAKS) testing at Jewett Elementary. All 3rd, 4th and 5th grades students are assessed in reading
and math (Science for 5th grade only). Testing policy allows students to take each assessment
up to 3 times. As you know, children learn at different rates and having flexibility involving
the timing of student assessment is critical to obtaining an accurate picture of your student’s
achievement level.
We feel it is important to notify parents of our testing practices. If students do not meet the state
benchmark on the state assessments, we continue to address the academic area of concern and
re-test them at a later time. We also allow and promote students who do meet the benchmark
initially to take the assessment again. Students often feel compelled to challenge themselves in
an effort to “beat” their prior score. This practice has helped our school’s test scores improve
dramatically.
As always, we rely on parents to support and encourage their student(s) to do their best. Thank
you for all you have done in recent months in this regard. Please consult with your student’s
teacher if you have concerns or would like to withhold your student from being re-tested after
meeting or exceeding on the assessments.
Sincerely,
Tom Rambo
