CAHPS Summer Program For Algebra CAHPS  Summer Program for Algebra & Geometry

Program Dates: June 21st– July 2nd, 2010

Time: Monday –Friday, 8:30 – 11:00 am

Where: CAHPS, room # 78

Cost: $25.00

Maximum enrollment:  40 students.  Space will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  Students must turn in  a completed registration form and have given money to the bookkeeper in order to reserve a spot.  If more than 40 students sign-up, we will create a waiting list.

Who should attend? The CAHPS Summer Algebra class is designed for CAHPS students who were enrolled in Algebra I or Geometry and have an incomplete from 1st and/or 2nd semester.  The summer program is best suited for students who have passed at least half of the proficiencies for a given semester.  If a student has passed fewer than half of the proficiencies in the semester, we recommend the student or parent confer with the classroom teacher to determine whether the summer program would be effective (in these cases, the two weeks may not be enough time for these students to learn all that they need to learn in order to move on to the next level of math).

How to register: Fill out the form, pay the $25 class fee with the bookkeeper then drop the completed form and a copy of the receipt from the bookkeeper off to Sharon Johnson in the CAHPS office.  Mrs. Johnson can make a copy of the receipt.

What if we have already made travel plans for some of the two weeks the class is offered? Call Principal Howland to see if the opportunity makes sense given the days you’ll miss.

What are the benefits of students taking the summer class?

If a student has an incomplete from 1st or 2nd semester at the end of the year, and they complete all the required proficiencies for the semester in the summer program, the incomplete will be changed to whatever letter grade the student earned (A, B or C), and the student will move on to the next level of math.

What if my student has one or more other classes that he/she failed this past year?  Can he/she make up that credit in addition to doing the Algebra session?  The Crater Campus has a “regular” Summer Program that runs the same two weeks as the Algebra session.   This is a fee based program.  It costs $75.00 per credit.  The dates for this program are June 21st – July 2nd.  We use a computer-based curriculum called Ed Options.  Students would attend the Algebra class from 8:30 – 11:00 and then work on Ed Options from 11:00 – noon.  You may obtain a registration sheet for the regular summer school by contacting Brad Eaton, CAHPS Student Services Coordinator (541 494-6250).

Why are we doing this?

We want more students to successfully go on to their next level of math next year.  Last spring, I looked at our math data to answer the question, “What should we do with a student who does poorly (received a D or an F) in Algebra?  Should he/she repeat Algebra or be moved on to Geometry.”  That year, nine students who did poorly in Algebra were moved on to Geometry, and all nine ended up doing poorly in Geometry.  Fourteen students who did poorly in Algebra repeated Algebra and only half did either marginally or significantly better the second time around.  Based on that data, it’s clearly better to repeat than go on; but, neither approach had a strong enough record of success.  We needed another plan.  We agreed that we needed to clearly identify what students had to know and be able to do in order to be successful at the next level of math. These became the “Proficiencies.”  We also agreed we needed to provide an option (i.e. our Summer Math program) for students who, at the end of a given semester, had some, but not all the skills needed to go to the next level.

Our goal is to increase the number of students who move on to their next level of math with strong enough skills to be academically successful.

Why is there a cost this year when there wasn’t a cost last year?

We had hoped to offer the math summer program for free again this year.  Two weeks ago, we learned that the District needed to cut an additional 1.8 million dollars for next year.  With this cut, we have less available money to cover the instructors or tutoring time in the summer program.  To help cover these costs, we need to charge each student $20.  If the cost is a barrier, please contact us and we will see if there’s anything we can do.
