Homecoming 2010 – thoughts…comments…quibbles…suggestions…et al

Thoughts from Tbone – good representation of what it takes to be a business with producing products (shirts/towels), creating goodwill (downtown signs/middle school printing/canned food drive) and having lots of student involvement (business aspect) – float (science and innovation) – BIS-ookas (science, innovation and just plain coolness) – his question – “How can we take it to the next level and make more obvious to people (what we do here in BIS)?”

What a week it was from PPuff to Homecoming – Back in Black to Blackout – Party Packs to the Gang of 4 Towel (and shirt) Hawkers -  it was a pretty strong week. We want to know what you thought.  Reflect, Comment, Critique (properly) and think about next year…What can we do to make it even better.

Reminders – Spirit Days, lunch events, court voting, assembly, floats, t-shirts, towels, going to middle schools, dance….

We keep improving the Bis has better skills than the other schools…

I thought the signs downtown looked nice but they were really small and looking at them they didn’t feel like students had much to do with them.

    Marissa Dalton Reply:

I agree. I feel like the traditional window paint draws more attention. Maybe next year make stencils for the window painters so it looks consistant.

    Tyler Nab Reply:

    I agree.

    Gabriella Desimone Reply:

I agree as well. The stickers (what do you call the things that go on the windows?) looked bubbly on the window. I think we definitely need to kick it old school and use window markers/paint. We could incorporate those stickers but write around them with the paint perhaps? They weren’t eye catching.

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

Yeah the signs this year were so small. They didnt stick out at all. Sure they looked professional, but they didnt show craters artistic skills.

    Carissa Sweet Reply:

I like the stencil idea…I think it would look professional and still use window paint to catch people’s attention.

    Max Runia Reply:

Actually students did help make the window stickers..

    James Amidon Reply:

It doesn’t matter if students made them or not, it didn’t look or feel like they did. Public opinion is all about what is portrayed not necessarily the truth.

    Darcy Tokar Reply:

Some of them weren’t that noticeable. Window painting kind of catches peoples attention better.

    Jenny O'Conner Reply:

Ya but window painting is so messy and it never looks very good.

    James Amidon Reply:

its not the look, its the feel

    Carissa Sweet Reply:

The reason they looked so small was because the businesses chose the size of the sign that they wanted.

    Aaron Cray Reply:

thats understandable, the really small ones that I saw where in windows that already had the stores stuff on it, so although they where small I believe we had more than we had with the paint.

would have been nicer if we had won our game…

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

woulda been nice if we won a couple games, or they at least should of let us play a 3a team. but its ok

    Max Runia Reply:

Ouch 3a.. lol that’s so sad

Hey Caitlin why don’t you look at your guys’ record before you start criticizing ours.

I think the signs downtown looked really good. I thought they looked more professional, neat, and took a lot less time to put up rather than painting which sometimes looked sloppy and took a long time.

The terrible towels were pointless in my opinion. Nothing was done with them, they were kept in people pockets at most. It is a cool idea but the follow through of the idea was terrible at best. When I think terrible towels I think of the Pittsburgh Steelers and how they spin in the air.

    Jacob Broderick Reply:

I completely agree but it would feel really childish if we instructed people on how we think they should be used though.

    Alexander Schroeder Reply:

The towels all sold though so we did something right… But I agree in the sense that we should get the whole crowd to swing their towels.

    Darcy Tokar Reply:

The towels looked cool but I didn’t really see the point in them. It just looked kind of weird seeing people carrying towels in their pocket or on their shoulder.

    Christopher Dyer Reply:

what are you supposed to do with a towel when it is -55 degrees outside?

  • By Piers Rasmussen, November 2, 2010 @ 11:39 am

I just liked being able to do do something for this. Last year I was always doing something after school and didn’t get to help out. It was much better getting out of class to help.

  • By Meghan Quimby, November 2, 2010 @ 11:39 am

I really liked the huge banner in the middle of town, it made it seem so official and cool. The T shirts and terrible towels was cool also, but i feel like the designs should have been switched, like have the Tshirts be blackout and the terrible towns be the acdc one.

    Marissa Dalton Reply:

Banner in down town was legit.

  • By Kenneth Swenson, November 2, 2010 @ 11:39 am

I think over all it was pretty good, although things could have been better such as the theme for the homecoming week, most people I talked to didn’t like it at all, and the back in black would have been a better overall theme.

    Jacob Badura Reply:

I agree. The Rock Star and Superhero days were obviously not going to happen in terms of student support. Blackout and the Pink shirt day were fine, they were simple and people could go to Target and buy a $7 shirt if they wanted to.

  • By Clarece Sander, November 2, 2010 @ 11:40 am

Not many people dress up for spirit week so I think if there was an incentive other than just showing your spirit. maybe like a competition with a prize or points to help your school win.

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

They should have done the dogpound. Which basically is whoever has the best spirit outfit on will win a chance to sit at the football game sideline with a couch and pizza and drinks and invite 2 friends with them. that way alot more people would have been more involved i think.

    Gregory Lowder Reply:

yah i didnt follow that spirit week at all i had a white t-shirt on at the game

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

    ha good job pete :)

  • By Max Runia, November 2, 2010 @ 11:40 am

I liked the fireworks and the bis-ookas, they let me shoot one off so that was pretty freakin legit

  • By Isaac Hernandez, November 2, 2010 @ 11:40 am

Ok, so spirit days were pretty cool. Nothing hard about that, I was actually shocked by how many people dressed up and supported the spirit days.

As far as the lunch events go, THEY SUCKED pretty bad. I remember walking outside and hearing terrible sounds, It was a Karaoke singing contest thing/Dance contest thing, it was brutally horrid. I felt sorry for the peoples lack of talent and participation.

Court voting was cool. Assembly was too unoriginal. Floats were pretty fun participating in, t shirts were nice, towels are always fun, middle school eh, The dance was pretty wack! That’s about it.

  • By Christopher Dyer, November 2, 2010 @ 11:40 am

this years homcoming week was better than the last two i’ve been to. i think, to make it better, we should have an entire parade before the homecoming game down pine street and turns into the school to atract a bigger crowd

    Isaac Hernandez Reply:

The parade idea would be pretty cool, it makes sense.

    Alexander Schroeder Reply:

People don’t really show up to the homecoming parades though, except the Crater students.

    Gerald Jakabosky Reply:

Really? Have you been to one of these parades? Crowds of people show up for the 4th of July parade. Why wouldn’t anyone show up to support Crater’s homecoming?

    Alexander Schroeder Reply:

That’s cause it’s the 4th of July, not a football game. There have been homecoming parades before and people don’t show up for 4 floats.

  • By Justin Mccormick, November 2, 2010 @ 11:41 am

I’m in agreement with bigger downtown signs. I loved the banner across Pine Street. That was great. More stuff we could do definitely improve the pep at the pep assembly. (AKA Get more enthusiasm out of the announcers.) Other than that, just coming through with everything thats planned (blackhawks) will make it much better.

    Bridget Pierce Reply:

Yeah the banner looked really good. :) It was definitely eye catching.

Seeing as BIS spearheads just about every single activity, maybe we could outsource the not-a-lot-of-intelligence-needed tasks to some of the other schools. Ohhh and get a 5a or 4a school, so we can win a game.

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

    actually a 3a school maybe

I liked the fireworks and the bis-ookas, and the floats were good. Our halftime show with the band and flag team needed more practice, and I’m pretty sure they used the same routine for the powder puff game. They need to switch it up a bit.

    Gregory Lowder Reply:

i dont even like to see the band or flag team at half time…no effence i think it takes away from the football game…get the routien right or get out

    Max Runia Reply:

So true, it would be ok if they were awesome, but personally i saw a few of them drop their flags when they were supposed to catch them. It turned from a the cool homecoming court being announced, to our depressing flag team

I liked it how we planned what BIS was going to do(fireworks, bisooka, making t-shirts, pep rally, ect) and they actually happend. The best part that i thought, was that the students had a hudge roll…doing what we wanted to do was awsome.

what i didnt like…. what happend to showing you student body card an getting in for free???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

From what I saw, the “Blackout” theme didn’t seem to take much affect at the game. For whatever our theme is next year, something that might want to be addressed is decorating the stands with our theme.

    Benjamin Kosmatka Reply:

Yeah at the football game it was pretty hard to tell that everyone dressed for the “blackout”. I agree with Sam though that we should paint the stadium black or something to support the theme.

I think that year by year, our homecomings are becoming more conservative. I’ve always thought that homecoming was supposed to be about everyone “recklessly” showng their school spirit. I think that in the future, we should have more initiative to be crazy(a respectful crazy mind you.

    Max Runia Reply:

Thats true, but its hard to get crazy with school spirit when our school is represented by a purely losing football team..

I think that our float turned out good. I think that next year we should have a little more time then a week to actually work on the float, because it feels like we were cutting it close but we did finish. I liked downtown it looked good but i think that they could of been bigger because you couldnt really see what it said and what not from a little further away. It did look professional though.

  • By Thomas Rezendes, November 2, 2010 @ 11:43 am

I thought the assembly could have been better with the game… It seems like the game is always the same game but changed just a little bit. The T-Shirt printing at the middle school was great but i think it could have been better if the middle schools were more aware it was going to happen. Bigger and better signs around downtown would be better… They were almost unnoticeable if your driving. Everything else was good.

  • By Jordan Pappe, November 2, 2010 @ 11:43 am

window painting is fun but the businesses’ have to clean up after, thats why we did the stickers instead.
I really like rogan’s idea about a bon fire for next year. It would be a good pep rally if we did it the night before homecoming game.

  • By Lindsey Judd, November 2, 2010 @ 11:43 am

I thought the fireworks were cool but i think we could improve by shooting them off at different points in the game like whenever there was a big announcement or when the football team entered the field after half time.

  • By Hayley Morrow, November 2, 2010 @ 11:43 am

The fireworks were pretty awesome, it made the game more exciting. However people lost interest with it after weren’t paying attention to them, because they went off for a long time. It would have been cool to have the fireworks start later at halftime and have the finale going as the football players ran out from halftime. I also agree with Mackie and Marissa’s idea about the signs downtown.

  • By Julian Rambo, November 2, 2010 @ 11:43 am

I could have been better if people went along with the blackout theme. There were sections in the crowd that were all black, but then there were also sections that were orange/black and other colors too.

  • By Matthew Preston, November 2, 2010 @ 11:44 am

At halftime everything seemed really low-key. The floats and homecoming court didn’t stand out very much in my opinion. It all just happened with little excitement. Homecoming is a big deal, so we should make it more of a big deal next year.

  • By Courtney Villagrana, November 2, 2010 @ 11:44 am

I think that the stickers were a good idea because it takes less time and allows students to be creative but it doesn’t force them to worry about how it will turn out because it is printed and they don’t have to worry about the paint and the problems that come with window painting.

I like the terrible towels, yeah they were basically pointless, but they were a chance for the school to earn money and for the people of the school to show school spirit by buying them and bringing them to the game.

  • By Caitlin Ralls, November 2, 2010 @ 11:44 am

We should have had a bigger pep rally the night before the game, with our band playing our fight song loud, and people just hanging out around a big bonfire, that would have had people a lot more pumped for the big game.

  • By Aaron Isaacs, November 2, 2010 @ 11:45 am

Coordination, communication and preparation is what we need to improve on next year. Thinking from a broader perspective may help next year.

  • By Bridget Pierce, November 2, 2010 @ 11:45 am

This was probably the busiest homecoming week I’ve ever experienced. Between decorating the boys locker room, making baskets, posters, floats, costumes for theme days, and homework on top of that I was exhausted. But honestly…This was one of the best homecoming weeks that I ever had. I cheered my last football game and even though we didn’t win, our crowd was INSANE. Everyone was so into it. They asked us to cheer certain things, they started their own cheers, it was great. The dance was okay, It was really hot did anyone else notice that?? and overall….It was a night I will never forget. I love cheering football, because win or lose, most Crater fans represent no matter what. Thanks for making this the best last game I could ask for. :)

  • By Sarah Cartwright, November 2, 2010 @ 11:45 am

I like how all the freshman through seniors all worked together on homecoming. Showed really good team work. I feel like more people could have gotten interested in it. I agree with Marrissa on the window advertisement i was driving through town one day and i could not read it, i only recognized the crater logo(C). I also never heard anything about the dance, only reason i knew there was one because every homecoming has a dance. I think next year we should give the dance more attention, and maybe i will actually think of attending the dance. Because right now they are really not worth it.

For the Spirit week, students dressed up for the simple ones like wearing yellow and wearing pink as well as the black out day. Not very many dressed up for the Hero and rockstar ones. Incorporating simpler dress up days appeared to be more succesful throughout spirit week. This could be considered when deciding on dress up days for next year.

  • By Wyatt Self, November 2, 2010 @ 11:45 am

The game had lots of spirit the BIS-ookas were great from what I was hearing people were really enjoying that. Having the stand out side the gate while also selling terrible towels during the game was a great idea. The dance was also atleast twice as good as last years.

  • By Derek Baker, November 2, 2010 @ 11:45 am

first of the Bis-ooka was a great tool for hyping up the crowd and really brought a feel of spirit, then I looked off to the side there behind the end-zone was a bunch of people just standing around I think that there should be organized events in that area so that it is not just wasted space.

  • By James Amidon, November 2, 2010 @ 11:46 am

Overall I think the week was good. Things to improve:
    - the signs downtown were too small and looked more like we paid for them. It took away from the experience.
    - the dance needs to be on Saturday. Every other high school in our area does their dances on Saturdays, why have we still not graduated to this standard? Hopefully we can step it up with Prom, maybe somewhere other than the cafeteria? North and South run out of the Country Club… just saying.

    Bridget Pierce Reply:

I thought that it was cool how the students are being more included in the planing and running of homecoming, most of the time it’s just the teachers planning it and, sometimes they don’t really know what appeals to the students. The only thing that I had a problem with was the assembly, it seemed really disorganized and I’m sorry to say it but, Dumb.

  • By Shawna Neilson, November 2, 2010 @ 11:46 am

The T-Shirts and the towels were a huge success. I think it would have been cooler if people actually waved the towels around though… We could also print a few more towels and shirts next year since they sold so well this year.
I loved the BIS-ookas. Matt and Cory did a great job with them, although it would have been nice if we had more shirts/towels to shoot. ;)
The dance also went well I thought. It was cool that we had the black lights and laser lights. We also had a decent turn out.

  • By Gerald Jakabosky, November 2, 2010 @ 11:46 am

I thought the dance was pretty awesome. It was at least twice as more fun then last year’s. Kudos to those who helped set up and plan that shindig.
I was also impressed to see all the spirit at our game. The BIS-ookas helped get the crowd excited, along with the fireworks.
Next year I would like to see the homecoming court opened up to all grade levels. If you don’t want to read off 32 names for two kids from each school and grade level, then have an over-all representative for each class. That way we would have eight names instead of 32.

    Darcy Tokar Reply:

Homecoming court should be open to all grade levels again.

  • By Gabriella Desimone, November 2, 2010 @ 11:46 am

I thought the game was great! Loved the energy of everyone. The shirts, party pack items, and spirit were awesome. I thought the shirt/towel gun was cool too because everybody would kindof wake up when they would do it. Fireworks were AWESOME! Made my night : ) I want to look for a firework that could possibly say 2012 for next year though. Also, do the livestrong wrist bands, move the dance to saturday, have another event during the week (possibly), have a bonfire after the game, and get all the schools working together more. The pep rally was pretty weak friday afternoon. Hardly anyone showed up, so we need to figure out a way to get more people there. The assembly was better than most I’ve been to. The music and lights off were good. The games I felt were kindof the usual and I dont care for them too much. We need something a little more fresh. We should have a new sound system in the gym by about January I think, and that will help A TON! We need to work on getting more participation on the dress days, decorating the school, and school wide decorating. Lunch time games I don’t think were too much of a hit because of their location. Next year, I would like to not have a theme for the week really. I would like to go around the campus to each class room and maybe give out some c-mart merch to get people excited. Also, have only 2 or so people spend the day going to each class room to have people vote for homecoing king/queen because I think the outcome would be a little different. We should maybe vote for a princess/ prince so its not just seniors out there. Thats all I can think of right now. :)

I think that for the most part, calling it BIS homecoming, rather than a Crater homecoming would be an understatement, because it seems like most of the support for homecoming came from BIS, which says that the leadership of other schools needs to become more involved.

I dont think that the window graphics were a flop because they were next to unnoticeable. Among the reasons being that they were much too small and they didnt pop like the paint graphics usually do.

    Jordan Pappe Reply:

I saw little to no involvement by the other schools which makes me feel proud to be in BIS but also sad because we had to do 3 times the work while other just enjoyed the show.
    Definitely a BIS Homecoming

  • By James Amidon, November 2, 2010 @ 11:47 am

Oh and of all the hype… if our city will re-write code for a howitzer that never went off maybe we can get the community on board for a bonfire the night before?

    Caitlin Ralls Reply:

    i said that already!!!

  • By Jenny O'Conner, November 2, 2010 @ 11:48 am

This year was definitely better than previous years have been but we still need to work on the sprit week assembly. I think we should have it the Friday before homecoming week so we can make sure people know what to dress up as and just get every one excited. Also the volume, we need better speakers or something because it’s really hard to hear with all the people in the gym.

  • By Charlie Durand, November 2, 2010 @ 11:49 am

What if students were rewarded for dressing up for the spirit week? Example being an extra credit reward equivalent to 1% of the students total grade for each day they wore something that matched the theme for the day.

  • By Cassandra Copado, November 2, 2010 @ 11:49 am

I think that for next year we should try and make our advertising more for the public than just the school. Maybe hang up signs and posters around Central Point letting people know about the game and the different products we have for sale and about homecoming week in general. I think we can decorate down town a little bit more, maybe start planning homecoming week a couple weeks before and get decorations hung up ahead of time (maybe like a week or two) instead of trying to rush everything into one week. I also didn’t really hear much about the lunch time events so maybe we can advertise those better and get more students involved.

It was rather cheesy how they called out the home coming court. Like the cardboard arche thing didn’t feel very classy. I think we should think of a more unique way of calling them out on the field, and having more than jsut an arche.

    Alexander Schroeder Reply:

The arch was terrible I agree. We should have balloons and a stage thing.

    Jenny O'Conner Reply:

I think BIS put on one of the best homecoming shows, in the four years I have been here we have steped it up alot. I think bis is doing there part it would be cool if all the schools put fourth the effort we are.

  • By Alexander Schroeder, November 2, 2010 @ 11:50 am

The banner downtown was awesome but the window stickers were too small, not colorful or fun, and had bubbles when laid on… We should definitely go back to painting the windows; the whole window. Stencils would be nice so it looks professional but we could definitely step up the window designs.

What happened to the door designs? The hall designs didn’t happen at all. Everything else was pretty awesome though… float, BIS-ookas, fireworks, and the t-shirts/towels. Thumbs up for homecoming this year.

  • By Darcy Tokar, November 2, 2010 @ 11:51 am

At half time we should have turned off the lights for the fireworks. This homecoming was a lot better than last years and it was more creative. We should have made the pep rally during school like it was last year because than everyone can go. Not everyone knew the pep rally was after school.Next year we should definitely have an exciting half time show. Homecoming week seemed more about competition and it didn’t seem like many people were too excited. The homecoming assembly was a lot better this year.

    Mackenzie Hanson Reply:

I agree with the light thing. They made our shirts glow in the dark but then all the lights were on so it was pointless.

  • By Jenny O'Conner, November 2, 2010 @ 11:51 am

For the spirit week activities I think we should start hanging posters around school at least a full week before the actual homecoming week. This year I don’t think I saw any posters advertising the lunch events until the end of the week before homecoming week. I think advertising earlier will help to let everyone know what’s going on and get better results. But in general this year’s homecoming was way better and more fun than last year.

  • By Neil Seibert, November 2, 2010 @ 11:51 am

Perhaps the terrible towels would be swung if they had a reason to swing them. Maybe we shoulda gave them to roseburg to swing for us….

  • By Mackenzie Hanson, November 2, 2010 @ 11:51 am

Also, I think the “archway” for the homecoming queen and king was lame. I’m pretty sure it broke and it was really tiny. I think we should either get a better one or just forget it all together.

Ok so I really liked how everything worked and played out this year. The students really got more involved in homecoming and I really liked that. I also liked how we could out of class to work on things for homecoming. It really gave everybody a sense of they could help out in school. But for next year we should have hall decorations. Yeah I know they were a fire hazard thing but I kinda missed having decorations in the hallway. To me the halls looked kind of blah!!! Although the doors looked pretty cool. But they just weren’t eye catching as if it were a whole hallway. So that is just something to think about next year. But everything last week was really fun. =)
